The nuclear-powered Enterprise is the first aircraft carrier of this type and is one of the largest ship objects ever built. This gigantic aircraft carrier was commissioned on Nov. 25, 1961. Eight water-cooled reactors generate a total power of 300,000 hp, with which the ship reaches an average speed of 35 knots. The water displacement is 75,700 tons and the flight deck has a width of 76.8 meters. 414 officers and 4,260 crew members are on board on average. Because nuclear propulsion makes Enterprise independent of external supplies, large fuel depots are available for the shipboard aircraft. The U.S. Navy's largest and most advanced aircraft can be operated from Enterprise.
